Osamu Tezuka’s classic animated film; Metropolis is one of the main sources of research. The main aspect that I have been researching into is the background art. Metropolis is considered one of the best animated films to come from Japan, with its beautiful shots and its tight story, however, one of the most spectacular things in this animation is the background art.
Mainly rendered in 3D, the backgrounds usually focus on establishing shots around the city. These shots are varied in angles, looking all over the city, panning up and down buildings and zooming through them, this gives us a real feel towards the scenery in which this film takes place. This is something I want to try and do in my animation, using a variety of shots to get a real feel for where the protagonist is, and what is happening around her, be that a bustling city or a quiet waiting room.
